Local citation audit checklist

A citation audit compares public business listings with an approved source of business facts. Its first job is to find information that could confuse a customer.

Build an accurate reference record

Confirm the business name, address or service-area model, phone, website and relevant locations. Have the business owner approve the reference record. Record legitimate variations rather than assuming every formatting difference is a problem.

Prioritise meaningful discrepancies

Review the listings customers are likely to use. A wrong phone number, closed location or duplicate listing deserves attention before a minor punctuation difference. Save the listing URL, access requirements and evidence of the issue.

Close the loop

Assign corrections to an owner and record submission dates. Recheck the visible listing after an update is processed. Keep paid listing fees separate from audit or management fees, and avoid presenting a fixed number of new listings as a guaranteed ranking improvement.

Put the guidance to work

Capture your starting point, assign an owner to the next action, and decide what evidence will confirm that it worked.
